LESSON 121
Forgiveness is the key to happiness. (ACIM, W-121)
For me, the key to the lesson is this sentence: "The unforgiving mind sees no mistakes, but only sins." (ACIM, W-121.4:1)
To see sin is to see separation. My sin separates me from God and others. Your sin separates you from me. If I am the "bigger man" by forgiving your "sin" against me, I haven't really forgiven you, because I still see the separation.
I'm reminded of 1 Corinthians 13. Love "does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable; it keeps no record of wrongs." Also, love "rejoices in the truth."
We are individuals, but we aren't separate. Individual trees are all connected to the same ground. I doubt if one tree thinks of the next: "You're not growing properly." That'd be sad for trees if they thought this way.
As trees are connected to the ground, humans are connected by love. To count the imagined wrongs of others is to think, "they're not growing properly."
To forgive is to love, to keep no record of the "wrongs" and instead rejoice in what's right.
Forgiveness is the key to happiness because it sees the good in ourselves and others.
