Let there be vision, understanding, love, warmth...

Welcome to Daily Miracles, a running commentary on the 365 lessons of A Course in Miracles, an influential spiritual text from the 1970s. I am James Leroy Wilson and I invite you to join me as I go through this material for the first time.

I will there be light(ACIM, W-73)

In my other newsletter, Daily Bible ChapterI wrote this about light:

When I hear the word "light," I might think of one of several things:

  • A flash, spark, ignition, or explosion that immediately changes the state of things.

  • The means to see the physical world through the body's eyes, such as the sun or light bulbs.

  • Warmth; the sun may light the way, or a campfire may help us see at night, but they also warm us.

  • Lightness, as opposed to heaviness, in terms of weight or mass.

  • A happy emotional state (light-hearted, lighter than air).

  • Enlightenment, or a "flash" of understanding

Another concept of "light" that I didn't think about when writing the above, but mentioned in Lesson 58, is the joyful person who enters and "lights up" a room.

I don't know the full intentions of the authors of these Course in Miracles daily lessons, but I might choose to incorporate these different meanings as the circumstances warrant. For the most part, I think light in the Course has to do with "seeing" through enlightened understanding, but sometimes it's the feeling of warmth which love's light provide, or the feeling of "lightness" in which we're not weighed down. Both come from our inner light.

For example, feeling warmth toward someone I've held a grievance with. Feeling light-hearted once bitterness is gone.

So when I "will there be light" I desire there will there be light in all the ways we use the word.
