NFL MVP Chase: Divisional Round

Welcome to the MVP Chase, where I look for, or chase, the best objective criteria in determining greatness without personal bias.

Today's topics: NFL MVP Chase entering the Divisional Round

Attention: If you enjoy The MVP Chase and my other writing, I need your support right now to continue.

Unlike the quasi-official Associated Press NFL MVP Award, my NFL MVP Chase continues right through the Super Bowl. (Patrick Mahomes, however, was in the lead at the end of the regular season and would have my regular-season MVP vote.)

In review, to earn an MVP Point:

  • A quarterback must have a 100.0+ passer rating in a win or tie.

  • A back or receiver must have 100+ yards from scrimmage in a win or tie. (Multiple players on the same team can earn an MVP point in the same game.)

After the wild-card playoff round, several players that had a chance of winning the MVP Chase were eliminated. Here are the updated standings. A player must now have seven MVP points to have a chance at catching Mahomes (if Mahomes doesn't earn any more MVP points himself).

10 MVP Points

Patrick Mahomes, QB, Chiefs

9 MVP Points

Jalen Hurts, QB, Eagles

Justin Jefferson, WR, Vikings - Eliminated

8 MVP Points

+Joe Burrow, QB, Bengals

7 MVP Points

+Josh Allen, QB, Bills

+Stefon Diggs, WR, Bills

Daniel Jones, QB, Giants

Geno Smith, QB, Seahawks - Eliminated

The "+" beside Burrow, Allen, and Diggs indicates they didn't have a chance to earn an MVP point because of the cancellation of the Jan 2 Bills-Bengals game. It's something to keep in mind. It's also understood that Mahomes and Hurts didn't have a chance to win an MVP point this past weekend because their teams earned a first-round bye, and that should be to their credit. We'll sort this out if these players are still in contention in the conference championship and Super Bowl rounds.

I am still tallying all players who get a 100 passer rating or 100 scrimmage yards in a win. Even if they can't win the MVP Chase, they can still finish strong. For example, Saquon Barkley, Christian McCaffrey, and Dak Prescott all have six MVP points and can still tie for second place.

I should also note that all of McCaffrey's MVP points have come as a 49er. If he had had MVP points as a Panther, they'd be included separately.
