Bills-Bengals and the NFL MVP Chase

Welcome to the MVP Chase, where I look for, or chase, the best objective criteria in determining greatness without personal bias.

Attention: If you enjoy The MVP Chase and my other writing, I need your support right now to continue.

There is little I can say about Damar Hamlin's dire situation. I join with everyone in praying for him, his family, his friends, all members of the Bills organization, and all who've been impacted by his injury.

It's too soon to tell what deeper consequences it has for the NFL and the sport of football in general.

It's not too soon, however, to consider the impact of the season going forward. I do believe the game should be played, because it impacts the standings of other teams. The best proposal I saw was on Twitter, but I can't locate the tweet or source article. Allegedly, the NFL is pondering playing the game on what was scheduled to be Wild Card week.

  • Weekend of January 14-15, play the NFC wild-card games and the Bills-Bengals game. The AFC playoff contenders will have a bye that week, as the outcome of Bills-Bengals will determine AFC playoff seeding.

  • Weekend of January 21-22, play the AFC wild-card games; NFC playoff teams have the week off.

  • Weekend of January 28-29, divisional playoff games in the week that had been previously scheduled for the conference Championship games.

  • February 5, Conference Championship games in the week that had been scheduled for a bye for the Super Bowl teams. No bye week.

  • February 12: Super Bowl played as scheduled.

I think this is the fairest possible outcome for all parties involved, especially the teams involved but also the NFL's television partners.

The suspension of the Bills-Bengals game has impacted the NFL MVP Chase as well. Here's a review of how my MVP Chase works.

To win a point in the MVP Chase,

  • A quarterback must have a 100.0+ passer rating in a win or tie.

  • A back or receiver must have 100+ yards from scrimmage in a win or tie.

(Multiple players on the same team can earn an MVP point in the same game.)

Two players were in the lead entering Week 17: Jalen Hurts and Justin Jefferson. Hurts was out with an injury and Jefferson's team lost. Patrick Mahomes won, and his passer rating was above 100, so he joined them in the lead.

Joe Burrow might have also joined them, but his game was suspended. So he remains one point behind in the Chase.

Here's how it looks now:

9 MVP Points

Jalen Hurts, QB, Eagles

Justin Jefferson, WR, Vikings

Patrick Mahomes, QB, Chiefs

8 MVP Points

Joe Burrow, QB, Bengals

7 MVP Points

Geno Smith, QB, Seahawks

6 MVP Points

Josh Allen, QB, Bills

Josh Jacobs, RB, Raiders

Daniel Jones, QB, Giants

Trevor Lawrence, QB, Jaguars

Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Dolphins

Thirteen players have 5 MPV points, seven have 4, sixteen have three, 25 have 2, and 63 have one.

If I voted today, I would go with Mahomes, and likely would even if Burrow was able to join the leaders. Mahomes is ahead of Hurts in passer rating, and his passing yards and touchdowns alone exceed the total passing and rushing yards and touchdowns of Hurts. But Jefferson might still snatch it from either of them, and Burrow is still in the mix pending the status of the Bills-Bengals game.
