NFL MVP Chase and Week 12 Picks

Welcome to the MVP Chase, where I look for, or chase, the best objective criteria in determining greatness without personal bias.

Today's topics: NFL MVP Chase and Week 12 picks

NFL MVP Chase

Miami had a bye and Minnesota lost, so Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Jefferson didn't add to their MVP resumes. They were joined at the top by three more players.

In review, to earn an MVP point:

  • A quarterback must have a 100.0+ passer rating in a win or tie.

  • A back or receiver must have 100+ yards from scrimmage in a win or tie.

  • Multiple players on the same team can earn an MVP point in the same game.

Here are the standings:

6 MVP Points, 5 players

Joe Burrow, QB, Bengals (6-4)

Jalen Hurts, QB, Eagles (9-1)

Justin Jefferson, WR, Vikings (8-2)

Patrick Mahomes, QB, Chiefs (8-2)

Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Dolphins (7-3)

5 MVP Points, 5 players

Josh Allen, QB, Bills (7-3)

Stefon Diggs, WR, Bills (7-3)

Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, 49ers (6-4)

Derrick Henry, RB, Titans (7-3)

Geno Smith, QB, Seahawks (6-4)

4 MVP Points 5 players

Saquon Barkley, RB, Giants (7-3)

Dalvin Cook, RB, Vikings (8-2)

Tyreek Hill, WR, Dolphins (7-3)

Daniel Jones, QB, Giants (7-3)

Tony Pollard, RB, Cowboys (7-3)

Ten players have 3 MVP Points, 29 have 2, and 49 have 1.

Along with virtually everyone, as of right now I'd vote for Mahomes. In a seventh victory his passer rating was 97.7. In his game against the Titans his rating was just 80.9, but that was his season high in yards as the Chiefs made a 4th-quarter comeback to win in overtime.

In two of his three sub-100 passer rating victories, Jalen Hurts had 86 and 61 yards rushing. (In the Eagles' remaining victory he was below-average in passing and ho-hum in rushing). Justin Jefferson had 98 yards in a seventh victory, but in the Vikings' remaining win he had just 14 yards.

With one vote, I'd have Mahomes. If the NFL had a weighted voting system, it would be

1. Mahomes

2. Hurts

3. Jefferson

Week 12 NFL Picks

I was 7-7 last week and am 60-71 for the year (I began picking in Week 3). Things will have to break well from here on out for me to get over .500 for the year.

Giants at Cowboys: Cowboys by 13

Patriots at Vikings: Patriots by 4

Broncos at Panthers: Broncos by 2

Buccaneers at Browns: Buccaneers by 1

Ravens at Jaguars: Ravens by 12

Texans at Dolphins: Dolphins by 16
