Welcome to the Daily Bible Chapter. My name is James Leroy Wilson and I invite you to join me as I attempt to read the Bible with fresh eyes, as if I don't know anything about it, and without consulting experts on what it "really" means. Let's see where this takes us!
Attention: There is urgency in raising funds for The Daily Bible Chapter to continue regularly. Please read this message and send your support right now. Thanks!
Judges 4
I'm reading Young's Literal Translation (YLT) and the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV).
I found this interesting:
YLT: 4 And Deborah, a woman inspired, wife of Lapidoth, she is judging Israel at that time,
NRSV: 4 At that time Deborah, a prophet, wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel.
I wonder if the YLT got it wrong the NRSV was more accurate in meaning. But I like the idea that a prophet is someone "Inspired."
Deborah was also a judge. Not by appointment or election. She doesn't seem to have had a title. But she had authority because the people recognized she had authority in a nation without a State. Your sex didn't matter.
Deborah's authority and closeness to God were such that Barak didn't want to engage Sisera in battle without her presence.
With the confidence of Deborah's word, the LORD throws Sisera's army into a panic, and, as Deborah said, Sisera was killed by a woman.
Events unfolded as Deborah imagined. It is with imagination and confidence that great things are accomplished.
Remember that the nation of Israel represents you. Even if your enemy has 900 iron chariots, you can overcome them.
And your problems can be solved with imagination and confidence.
