Welcome to Daily Miracles, a running commentary on the 365 lessons of A Course in Miracles, an influential spiritual text from the 1970s. I am James Leroy Wilson and I invite you to join me as I go through this material for the first time.
Lesson 153
In my defenselessness my safety lies.
(ACIM, W-153)
This lesson reminded me of radio personality and pacifist Rober LeFevre. I can't verify that this story is factual, but it's still illuminating. Members of a union stormed "a radio station he worked at. And he just fell flat on the ground and lay there. They were so nonplussed they walked out without beating the s— out of him."
LeFebre didn't fear his attackers. He did not preemptively attack first. Nor did he put himself in a defensive position by, for instance, picking up his chair as a shield.
Instead, he refused to play the "game of fear." (ACIM, W-153.12:2)
For most of us, our defenses - our fears - more often relate to money, relationships, and reputation than the direct threat of physical violence. But those fears are based on the idea that we have something to lose. We can, instead, play games where "there is no loser." (ACIM, W-153.12:3)
If I feel like I'm in a situation where I have to defend myself, I can remember to do as Follette did and play a different game.
