Welcome to the Daily Bible Chapter. My name is James Leroy Wilson and I invite you to join me as I attempt to read the Bible with fresh eyes, as if I don't know anything about it, and without consulting experts on what it "really" means. Let's see where this takes us!
Joshua 13 and 14
I'm reading Young's Literal Translation (YLT) and the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV).
With the wars over, the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh get to go back to the lands east of the Jordan promised to them by Moses.
East of the Jordan, Caleb of the Judah tribe asks Joshua for the land of Hebron. Caleb, like Joshua, had been faithful to Moses (and The LORD) from the beginning.
Caleb asked, and Caleb received. Caleb didn't assume Joshua would know he wanted Hebron, and Caleb didn't assume that Joshua would reward him. He asked.
To "ask" doesn't mean to beg or form a question. Caleb, in fact, demanded of Joshua to have Hebron. Caleb desired it and believed he had a right to it.
If you feel that you are worthy or deserving of something, then ask for it. Demand it.
This chapter isn't about history, it's a lesson.
