Welcome to Daily Miracles, a running commentary on the 365 lessons of A Course in Miracles, an influential spiritual text from the 1970s. I am James Leroy Wilson and I invite you to join me as I go through this material for the first time.
If I defend myself I am attacked. (ACIM, W-135)
Today’s lesson is a long one. 26 paragraphs. I hope the extra minutes of reading didn’t disrupt your plans. It’s one of my favorites so far.
How often have your grievances toward others been based on how they changed your plans? You thought life should go one way, but then others didn’t conform to your expectations?
“Because my business manager turned out to be incompetent, I don’t have a comfortable retirement fund.”
“Because I was betrayed, I fear relationships and will never find love again.”
“Because the politicians [did/didn’t] do something, I don’t feel safe.”
We point the finger at others for our own problems which, the Course tells us, aren’t problems at all. They’re problems invented by your ego.
We expend energy in the present, not in enjoying the present, but in preparing for a fearful future.
Our bodies need very little, and our minds, which are eternal, don’t need what the body provides.
We, then, have nothing to fear and nothing to defend. We can just enjoy today and enjoy tomorrow when it comes.
