Letting go of the ego

Welcome to Daily Miracles, a running commentary on the 365 lessons of A Course in Miracles, an influential spiritual text from the 1970s. I am James Leroy Wilson and I invite you to join me as I go through this material for the first time.

LESSON 114

Today's Review Lessons:

(97) I am spirit. (ACIM, W-114.1:1)

(98) I will accept my part in God’s plan for salvation. (ACIM, W-114.2:1)

If I am spirit, then I am eternal. Nothing can hurt me.

If I am mortal, just about anything can hurt me. If I am mortal with the fear of death, then any hurt or pain can "ruin" a life that already has a short time limit. This can lead to the ultimate expression of ego: "Why me?"

There are many definitions of "ego," but they all seem attached to mortal life, to an awareness of who and what I am in this present time and space, and an awareness of death. To let go of the ego is to let go of the mortal body through awareness of the eternal, spiritual self.

Upon the diagnosis of disease, the ego may say: "But there is so much I want to accomplish!" or "There is so much work to do to make the world a better place!" The spirit, however, says that everything is already complete because we are eternal.

Salvation is letting go of the ego. It doesn’t mean losing a sense of your biological self or innate survival mechanisms. It doesn’t mean losing your mind. It means expanding the mind to realize who you really are: complete, perfect, eternal. Spirit.
