Welcome to Daily Miracles, a running commentary on the 365 lessons of A Course in Miracles, an influential spiritual text from the 1970s. I am James Leroy Wilson and I invite you to join me as I go through this material for the first time.
My only function is the one God gave me. (ACIM, W-65)
My day went a little off "course." The lesson today says, "The idea for today reaffirms your commitment to salvation. It also reminds you that you have no function other than that. (ACIM, W-65.1:1-2)
I had a hard time grasping the concept. If salvation is my only function, what is it that I'm saved from? It seems that it's salvation from the illusions I myself had created. But does it make sense for one's only function is to resolve a problem one has created?
Isn't the real purpose of salvation whatever comes after it? I don't think we have only salvation from X, but we have salvation so that we might do, have, or enjoy Y.
And while contemplating, the thought of joy came up. We have salvation so that we may have joy. That, not salvation per se, feels like my only function. You could say it puts the "fun" in function. I ended up spending the day thinking, not about salvation, but about joy and what might be getting in the way of it.
