Welcome to Daily Miracles, a running commentary on the 365 lessons of A Course in Miracles, an influential spiritual text from the 1970s. I am James Leroy Wilson and I invite you to join me as I go through this material for the first time.
I am under no laws but God’s. (ACIM, W-76)
For me this is key:
We will begin the longer practice periods today with a short review of the different kinds of “laws” we have believed we must obey. ²These would include, for example, the “laws” of nutrition, of immunization, of medication, and of the body’s protection in innumerable ways. ³Think further; you believe in the “laws” of friendship, of “good” relationships and reciprocity. ⁴Perhaps you even think that there are laws which set forth what is God’s and what is yours. ⁵Many “religions” have been based on this. ⁶They would not save but damn in Heaven’s name. ⁷Yet they are no more strange than other “laws” you hold must be obeyed to make you safe. (ACIM, W-76.8:1-7)
The human intellect cannot create laws. Neither can it discern them or discover them. At most, perhaps our sciences can discover, as the author Joshua Cutchin once said in conversation, "rules of thumb" that we can rely on as we go through day-to-day activities (e.g. the concept of gravity). But these tend to embed in our conciousness as "laws" which are impossible to break.
That's what the intellect has us believe: some things are impossible. That we can solve life's puzzle, that we can exit the maze, only by using certain "scientifically proven" or "tried and true" methods while dismissing other options as impossible.
But what is God's Law? I'm guessing further lessons will talk about love. Perhaps about accepting it or remaining blind to it. And that in God and in Love, anything is possible.
