Welcome to the Daily Bible Chapter. My name is James Leroy Wilson and I invite you to join me as we discover new insights and new perspectives from a very old book.
EXODUS 6
I'm reading Young's Literal Translation (YLT) and the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV).
Well, something interesting popped up. Today we see in Exodus 6:2-3: "God also spoke to Moses and said to him: “I am the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name ‘The Lord’ I did not make myself known to them."
But it seems that they did know God by the name "the LORD."
For instance, Genesis 13: 3-4: 3 He journeyed on by stages from the Negeb as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai, 4 to the place where he had made an altar at the first; and there Abram called on the name of the Lord.
Also, Genesis 15:7: "Then he said to him [Abraham], “I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess.”
I'm sure there are other examples, and from Genesis 2 on God was almost always referred to by the writer of Genesis as "the LORD" (or Jehovah in the YLT).
I say, "Contradiction!"
The author(s) of these books could have used more thorough reviews by editors to get the story straight.
Exodus 7
Having grown up in the household of a previous Pharaoh, perhaps Moses was trained in the "secret arts" of the wise men and sorcerers, and demonstrated with the rod trick that he was a little better at magic.
These Egyptian magicians also demonstrated to Pharaoh that the "water to blood" trick could also be done.
I have to give credit to Pharaoh; he was not to be fooled by magic tricks, no matter how grand the scope.
