Welcome to Daily Miracles, a running commentary on the 365 lessons of A Course in Miracles, an influential spiritual text from the 1970s. I am James Leroy Wilson and I invite you to join me as I go through this material for the first time.
I have no neutral thoughts. (ACIM, W-16)
The Lesson goes on to say:
Besides your recognizing that thoughts are never idle, salvation requires that you also recognize that every thought you have brings either peace or war; either love or fear. (ACIM, W-16.3:1-2)
Recent lessons have mentioned "God," and now the word salvation is introduced. This is beginning to sound like a course in theology.
But it depends on what salvation is for. From what are we being saved? Perhaps it's salvation from hell - the living hell of thoughts that create division and separation, that bring "war" (hatred?) and fear.
Any thought can make you feel good or bad. You may hear the final score of a football game. You had no rooting interest in it, so you think you don't care, but you say about the coach of the losing team, "They should fire him."
You may think, "This isn't personal." You may think, "The coach makes millions of dollars and his family will be well-off even if he's fired."
But does the thought really make you feel good?
Would you say these things to the coach's face? Would he perceive love coming from you?
Perhaps it's true that there are no idle or neutral thoughts. Perhaps we see so much negativity, and are so critical of others, that we don't even realize how bad we're actually feeling. Or how much better we'd feel if we were less critical and had more positive thoughts about others.
