Commentary on A Course in Miracles: Lesson 23

Welcome to Daily Miracles, a running commentary on the 365 lessons of A Course in Miracles, an influential spiritual text from the 1970s. I am James Leroy Wilson and I invite you to join me as I go through this material for the first time.

I can escape from the world I see by giving up attack thoughts. (ACIM, W-23)

Today's lesson is a little longer - seven paragraphs - but I read it twice to absorb it. Attack thoughts and thoughts of being attacked are the same thoughts. The thought "he's a narcissist" and the thought "I'm no good at ___" are the same thoughts.

I bet even when we try to be grateful and loving, we might have attack thoughts.

"I'm so thankful they were so kind and gracious to me, even after I made that huge mistake" is an attack thought; I'm attacking myself.

"Their heart was in the right place, even though it didn't work out," is an attack thought. I might not be attacking their intentions, but I'm attacking their judgment, competence, or abilities.

Maybe another way to describe an attack thought is thinking, and therefore seeing, that something is wrong.
