October 20 in history (via Wikipedia)
1947 – The House Un-American Activities Committee begins its investigation into Communist infiltration of Hollywood, resulting in a blacklist that prevents some from working in the industry for years.
Shameful. And remember, this was not Sen. McCarthy. On paper at least, his crusade, years later, was an honorable one. This Hollywood investigation was un-American.
1968 – Former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy marries Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis.
A relative was an exchange student in Spain at the time. Spain, not Greece. She told me decades later that lots of people were upset about it and asked her, as an American, felt. Her attitude was, "It's her life." Don't know if that's indicative of the cultural differences between the U.S. and Europe, or if my relative had common sense.
