Roy Scheider's portrayal of Chief Brody in the first Jaws is perhaps the most human that I've ever seen in a thriller or adventure movie, and is the main reason I rank Jaws at the top of my list of favorite movies. Scheider was also terrific as Gene Hackman's partner in The French Connection and as the Bob Fosse-type guy in All That Jazz. He also had a role in Marathon Man, another one of my favorites.
More of a working actor than a movie star, he had dozens of roles over the past twenty years. He will be missed.
