"At a time when states and the private sector are partnering to further discovery of this promising science, the federal government should be doing more to improve the lives of millions of Americans," Corzine said.If the "states and the private sector" are already doing it, why should the federal government get involved?
My position on federal funding of stem cell research is spelled out here. I would agree that the federal government shouldn't impose rules on that would cut off already-existing aid to labs if they conduct stem cell research. (If aid comes with strings attached, why provide aid at all?) In any case, the federal government should embark on a policy of ending such aid altogether, and certainly shouldn't initiate new funding.
