Tradition has one Cabinet Secretary to be absent from the State of the Union speech so that if everyone at the event was killed, there would still be someone in the Presidential line of succession to take over.
There are two that we definitely do not want in that position, Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff and today's designated absentee, Alberto Gonzales. Gonzales is a monster whose own words make him worthy of impeachment.
