I don't really care that much, and I have nothing against Italy, but I'm pulling for France in the World Cup. Why? No good reason, only that so many Americans, particularly of the neocon persuasion, hate France. I like to see them pissed off.
While I generally have little interest in soccer, I must say I do enjoy the World Cup. The best thing about the World Cup is, like American Football, there a few games, so each game is important, especially the elimination rounds. Add to the fact that it will be another four years before any of these teams can compete again, and you can see why it's such a big deal to the rest of the world.
I too am rooting for France, mainly because they were not supposed to make it past the first round, and because they decisively beat perennial favorite Brazil. Add to that the drama of France's captain, Zidane, coming out of retirement for one last run, and this is sports at its best.
penalty kicks at the end decide the world championship once again. I was pulling for France, but my heart was for Portugal. Perhaps i will take a kaleidopic of a soccerball. I like your reasoning on pulling for France - the neocons are probably wondering why the fix wasn''t in for the good ole US of A. que sera' now that the game is over, perhaps the europeons will pay more attention to world affairs.

Sure, the moment I mention Zidane, he head-butts an Italian player and gets red-carded and ejected from the game. The French are idiots.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way. It's too bad, as France seemed to be controlling the game.
ReplyDeleteI think soccer should have sudden-death overtime.
