Prosperity lies not in the size of the nation, nor the size of its government, but rather in free trade. It is the fact that the USA is a large internal free trade zone, that explains our wealth and freedom. And the benefit of free trade does not require political centralization.
Roger Kerr also points out that one of the "benefits" of a large country, transferring wealth from rich regions of the country to poor regions, does not invigorate those regions (eg, East Germany, Tasmania).
Good lessons as the feds continue to pour money into ghettoes and rural areas.
