Privatizing Roads

This is one of those hypothetical problems - how can we possibly get to the point of privatizing roads? But the article here describes government at work: looting the many to pay off the few, while politicians have no incentive to be frugal and their private contractor beneficiaries have no reason to be efficient.

When coercion (such as taxation) becomes the cornerstone of society, normal incentives and sane calculation go out the window. If this is true for such a seemingly indispensible "public good" such as city streets, how much worse can it be for so many other governmental services?
