I got nuthin'

On the Miers withdrawal, the Plame indictments, the 2000 war dead, I just don't have anything to say. I suppose they are theoretically important, and if Janice Rogers Brown gets nominated to the Supreme Court or the President himself is indicted or impeached, my attention may come back to politics. Heck, maybe it will tomorrow.

But there needs to be passion, and I don't have any for politics right now. Passion is fueled by hope, and even anti-government and "anti-political" writers retain some hope for change in the political order. It is that hope that sustains us through all the outrageous policies and stupidity we deal with. We must believe that our words are at least planting seeds for a better tomorrow.

Don't get me wrong: I believe I have been planting seeds, and that I will continue to do so. But today's news just provokes anger and boredom in me, and the sense that nothing I can do or say will make a difference. The anger used to be righteous indignation, but now it's just a momentary clouding of the mind and piercing of the gut. After it passes, I think, why waste my time on this b.s.?

It's like being with a, uh, difficult woman. The aggravation actually accounts for a lot of the attraction. You may be pissed off a lot of the time, but at the same time you have hope for a better future with her. But after a period of time, you just get tired of her and realize that nothing's going to change.

Politics is a bitch.

But to lose hope for politics is not the same as losing hope for life. Far from it. Liberty may be the highest and only political end for man, as Lord Acton said, but happiness is the highest of all ends. Yes, I dream of a life free from oppressive laws and taxes. But I also have other, bigger dreams.

So expect to see a change in direction with this blog, though where it's going to go, I'm not yet sure.

  2. James,

Yup. Just yup. If I wasn't such a goddamn junkie for politics, I'd do the same thing you're doing. Good to see someone getting the monkey off his back.

    Regards,
    Tom
