It's really simple. Oscars for best Supporting Actress almost always go to the most beautiful nominee, and while I don't know who the others are, it's statistically impossible for any of them to be more beautiful than Natalie Portman.
Also, Martin Scorsese never wins for Best Director. The year of Raging Bull, he lost to an actor, Robert Redford. The year of Goodfellas, he lost to another, Kevin Costner. This year, he's up against another actor, Clint Eastwood. And no one's suggesting that the Aviator's as good as Goodfellas.
